By her 12th birthday, baseball was already a key part of Maria Pepe’s daily routine.
She had first picked up the sport when she was around 5, playing with other kids in her Hoboken neighborhood. She remembers running down the stairs and into the streets to play whiffle ball and stickball. Even though she was the only girl in the group — this was the 1960s — she never felt out of place.
